One of the perks of my job is that, twice a year, I find myself quite close to Bovington. So, when review kits come to me, and I can see the real thing, I will stock up on photographs.
Although not a rocket carrier, Bovington’s vehicle is certainly original and was captured in North Africa. It is a 251c with the rivetted hull and was originally an unarmed ambulance with capacity for four stretchers. Over the years I have seen it there with stretchers in place, then painted dark grey with mannequins in the back representing a troop carrier, and now repainted again in North Africa colours.
The back doors have been removed and replaced with a clear Perspex cover allowing you to see inside, but not to touch or climb inside. Sadly, it doesn’t allow for clear photography. Talking to one of the volunteers, he said that the rear doors are still there but are held in storage.
