If we step into the hot-tub time machine and dial it back to 2006, Accurate Armour released what I consider one of the best full resin kits ever produced in 1:48 – their Austin K2/Y ambulance. It was and still is, a wonderful kit. Now, I get that most punters don’t like full resin kits for a number of reasons and that somewhat blocked aftermarket sets appearing for it.
Fast forward to the present day and Tamiya has seen fit to release the Austin Ambulance also. The kit is typical of Tamiya - great fit and generally accurate in all quarters. Because it’s a mainstream kit and is relatively cheap aftermarket producers generally hop on board. Fat Frog Scale Models (love that name) seems to be the first cab off the rank and has produced a wonderful set of five 3d printed wheels. The set includes two front, two rear and one spare. The tread pattern differs from both the Accurate Armour and Tamiya examples by having the main wheels weighted and secondly having a Dunlop directional tread pattern, moreover the tyre sidewall are detailed with the Dunlop logo and tires size information in a raised form on the side wall itself.
The prints are first class with thin print stems and absolutely no tell-tale print lines in evidence even under high magnification.
The detail is both crisp and accurate.
