F1 FACES AN ENGINE REVOLUTION
Formula 1 is set to abandon its current turbocharged hybrid engine format in favour of a new concept for 2021, which will lead to engines being cheaper, less complex and louder. The FIA held a meeting with all current F1 engine manufacturers, as well as representatives from brands currently outside of the sport, last Friday to discuss the future direction of engine design and specification. Todt has been highly critical of F1’s current engines, labelling them “too expensive, too complex and too reliable” prior to last week’s meeting. MN understands that all the current suppliers attended Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda, as well as representatives from the Volkswagen Audi Group, which has long kept a watching brief on the sport.
