FRANKFURT 2016 what you might have missed

This year’s Musikmesse felt like it came and went with a whimper but actually, there were some important announcements (even if we had to go looking for them). Here’s a roundup of the best of what you (and indeed we) might have missed…

It’s fair to say that Frankfurt’s Musikmesse got a bit lost this year or, okay, we got a bit lost at Frankfurt this year. To give you some background, Frankfurt Musikmesse – or simply ‘Frankfurt’ or ‘Messe’ to those of us who have been going to it for two decades or more – is one of the key events on the music-production calendar. It’s where lots of new gear announcements are made and where the industry gathers to catch up on the latest news and gossip.

But, actually, it might not be any more… This year’s show took on something of a different look and feel, and instead of it being an industry-only event, it became something of a scrum where industry people stood confused and bewildered – often in halls a mile or so away from where they were supposed to be (us, that is) – alongside members of the public seemingly looking for a good old-fashioned family day out. As such, the new format confused the more elderly members of the MusicTech team. More importantly, a slightly uncertain music-gear industry seemed wary of the changes to Messe, so decided to make most of its announcements at January’s NAMM show instead (hence the craziness of that show), or relocate down the autobahn to Berlin for the all-new Superbooth16 show that took place a week or so before Messe.
