SHOW OFF YOUR STUDIO

Interviewee Alican Yazıcıoglu Contact alicanyazicioglu@gmail.com , www.phallen.co

Alican’s studio now is a wondrous place…

Alican first sent us some incredible photos (right) of his incredible Manhattan studio (including one with him sleeping with some synths while Manhattan shone at night), but by the time we got in touch, he had relocated back to his native Turkey (above). Both incredible studio spaces…

MusicTech Tell us about your studio, or should we say ‘studios’…

Alican “It started in New York, when I decided to turn my hobby into a career and started to acquire several instruments. I met my writing partner Dmitri, aka Pitch Black, and gradually the whole bedroom turned into a home studio with great vibes through the ambience and its inspirational Manhattan view – a great place to keep us motivated. I’d lived abroad for 10 years and felt like it was time to move back home. In order to keep the same vibe as New York, I chose to move to the Zorlu Center in Istanbul, which is near the Bosphorus Bridge that connects Asia and Europe. As well as acoustics, aesthetics are also a priority for me. Lighting can intensify the creation process, so we use colour-changing RGB light strips that can be controlled via iPad. I also have full control of the studio through the iPad, to turn all the equipment on and off.”

About MusicTech

Now settled into 2018 we look ahead to the future of music. With NAMM 2018 behind us we had a chance to ponder on the many new and exciting pieces of tech we saw and their impact on music creation. In this issue, we bring you our annual show report, containing info on all the latest tech that you can expect to get your hands on in 2018. In keeping with the ‘future’ theme, our lead interview highlights the work of the legendary technological pioneers at the Bell Labs and their collaboration with artist Beatie Wolfe. Their augmented reality, 3D work Raw Space reimagines the album as a multi-sensory, immersive experience. We also speak to Aki Mäkivirta from Genelec about the advanced tech at the heart of the award-winning The Ones monitors. Elsewhere this issue, we have a guide to taking your mixes to the stage, our usual tips and tutorials and an expanded reviews section. We hope you enjoy the issue…
