Eurorack Modular Oscillators

The signal chain has to start somewhere in a Eurorack, and that’s almost certainly going to be with an oscillator – but aren’t they all the same? Dave Gale catches some waves…

Modular Monthly Oscillators Part 1

Part One

What’s better than one AJH VCO? Three, of course, for that classic Minimoog sound in a Eurorack. The full MiniMod package offers three oscillators feeding a Moog-style ladder filter

If there’s one element in your Eurorack that you’d find it pretty difficult to live without, it would be oscillators. That’s the bit where the noise starts, and certainly in the case of ‘East Coast’ (ie, Moog-like) systems, it’s going to mean a device that generates a mixture of pure and rich waveforms which are ripe for the next stage of synthesis – which is normally the subtractive filter. But with such a bewildering array of oscillators on the market, it’s time to sort out what’s what and pick a few choice models which deserve a second look. Now, this list is not exhaustive, and certainly not designed to be a ‘list of lists’, as it’s such a subjective viewpoint – but all Eurorack users will doubtless have a view, so we’re going to point out the modules that are popular, and a few that have some surprises up their sleeve.
