1 SETOUCHI

MARBLED MEAT, EYE-POPPING ART AND A SCENIC COAST

WHY NOW? Japan is to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup, and for those looking to avoid the crowds in Tokyo or Osaka, Japan’s Inland Sea is the ideal low-key getaway. And British Airways’ new direct light to Osaka launches in March, meaning a transfer of just a few hours.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS: England, Scotland and Ireland all have group qualifying games at Kobe Misaki Stadium. The good news is there’s plenty to do once the inal whistle goes. Encompassing the Seto Inland Sea and the coastal areas of three of Japan’s four main islands, the Setouchi region is best known for its Kobe beef — fatty, pink, marbled cuts — but don’t miss its oysters or udon noodles, either (there’s even an Udon Tasting Taxi Tour in Kagawa). Setouchi is also the world’s largest sake brewing region.

About National Geographic Traveller (UK)

We reveal the destinations that made our Cool List 2019 — from booming gastronomic hotspots to up-and-coming cities, this is the last word in where you should visit in the year to come. Elsewhere, we explore the wild side of Quebec’s national parks; leave our shoes behind on Colombia’s barefoot Pacific coast; and spend a long weekend in Bornholm. Other highlights this issue include Kuala Lumpur, Richmond, Prague, Marrakech and Taipei while our photo story joins the wild horse herders in Iceland’s rural east.
