A protester waves the Zimbabwean flag during a demonstration against President Robert Mugabe on November 18. The protests came after the longtime leader fired his vice president and tried to detain Zimbabwe’s leading military commander. Many speculated the moves were part of a plan for Mugabe’s wife, Grace, to succeed him, and on November 15, the military put Mugabe under house arrest, and the president’s party later expelled him. It was a coup in everything but name; the 93-year-old is still technically president, as the military has tried to provide him with a graceful exit. As of publication, however, he continued to cling to power. Or at least the illusion of it.
