BEFORE HE BECAME a war photographer— the war photographer—Don McCullin took pictures of a north London street gang called the Guv’nors: meaty boys in sharp suits, posing surlily on a bomb site, as if for the cover of their first album. In February 1959, one of those boys, Ronald Marwood, was tried for the murder of a policeman. Those pictures acquired a sudden heat. As Marwood was hanged, McCullin’s career as a professional photographer was born.
