Oroville, California— Firefighters take down an American flag on July 8 as flames surround a home in this city about 70 miles from Sacramento. A massive heat wave has swept over California, sparking the state’s first major wildfires since its long drought ended earlier this year. The conliagration has forced thousands to flee their homes. Fires also raged in Arizona, Oregon, Nevada and Canada, as firefighters hurried to contain the flames.
