Diyarbakir, Turkey— Police detain a protester in the southeastern city on September 9, after Turkish authorities suspended more than 11,000 teachers over alleged links to the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey had launched the largest operations in its history against the group, which it considers a terrorist force. Authorities also removed two dozen elected mayors in Kurdish-run municipalities. Since surviving a coup attempt in July, Erdogan has cracked down on both the PKK and supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom he accuses of orchestrating the coup.
