CARL COURT
Dover, England— Passersby look up at a new mural by the anonymous British artist and political activist Banksy on May 9. The threestory painting shows a workman chiseling away one of the gold stars on the European Union lag. The mural appeared in this southeastern English town on the same day that French voters chose as their next president centrist Emmanuel Macron, rejecting far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen. The painting appeared to reference fears of a “Frexit”— the exit of France from the EU—as Macron had campaigned on a pro-EU stance while Le Pen had threatened to leave the economic partnership.
