Antwerp, Belgium— Women in burkinis and bikinis join forces in Antwerp at an August 27 protest against several French towns’ attempts to ban the full-body swimsuits favored by some Muslim women wishing to cover up while swimming. Video of French police forcing women on beaches to take offtheir burkinis drew comparisons to the morality police in Saudi Arabia and Iran, and France’s highest court suspended such bans on the grounds that they violated fundamental liberties. The bans were a reaction to a string of attacks by Islamist militants that have left France grappling with balancing security and religious tolerance.
