If Topps had been in charge of the Apollo 11 moon landing instead of NASA 50 years ago, it’s likely that two astronauts would have landed on Mars, or Pluto or maybe even downtown Hoboken, New Jersey. Fortunately for the life of a man or three and the history of all mankind, NASA’s man on the moon mission went off without a hitch, thanks to a team of talented engineers and heroic astronauts.
But Topps, in two related series of Man on the Moon cards, managed to confuse collectors – and maybe even itself – with a bizarre system of card numbering, some outlandish transpositions on card backs that make puzzle completion difficult if not impossible, and more than the usual examples of miss-cuts.
