A STUDY is under way into the feasibility of developing 16 extra care homes in rural Lewis — with four potential sites under consideration.
Three of the sites — in Eoropie and on land adjacent to Sgoil an Taobh Siar and Carloway Day Centre — are being examined because they are owned by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, one of the lead partners alongside Hebridean Housing Partnership.
A fourth site, at Upper Barvas, is being considered because landowner Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (Galson Estate Trust) approached the partner organisations with plans for an investment opportunity which would help further the aims of Galson’s Strategic Plan. Upper Barvas common grazings committee has agreed the land should be taken out of crofting tenure to allow the development to go ahead and help address a critical shortage of available land for housing.
