A TRADITIONAL music superfan, who has already taken to the stage with some of his music idols, looks to be following in their footsteps after his Mòd win on Monday.
Aspiring Gaelic singer Andrew MacPhail, who attends Dunbeg Primary School, won the 11-12 boys’ solo singing competition in his first Royal National Mòd as a soloist. The 11-year-old said he loved to sing and has already taken to the stage with his heroes from trad bands Trail West and Tide Lines. He even had Oban’s Ceol an Aire play at his 10th birthday party. ‘All my friends are into pop music,’ said Andrew, ‘but I think it’s rubbish. I’ve got more of an ear for traditional Scottish music and I hope to have my own band one day.’ Andrew’s mother Catriona said: ‘We always have music from trad bands playing in the house, so he has grown up with it. He knows all the words to the songs. We saw Tide Lines play on Easdale Island and the band noticed he was singing all the words during the first half, so they asked him to sing with them for a song in the second half.’
Rowan Morris from Port Ellen Primary School, Islay, with the Cowal Trophy after winning the 9-10 years, learners, poetry recitation. She was also second in the solo singing girls’ 9-10 years competition.
