THE £19.5m restoration of Lews Castle Museum and Archive in Stornoway was officially opened by Scotland’s First Minister on Monday.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP examines the Lewis Chessmen.
At the project’s heart is a new museum nan Eilean, and Tasglann nan Eilean – the first public archive for the islands. The modern museum extension, with views over Stornoway, the harbour and the minch, is described as an echo of the castle’s former glasshouses, and a visible symbol of its rebirth.
