Welcome to the April kit review. As the summer season edges closer we test out the latest wetsuits, from Arena’s carbon technology to the Alpkit Silver Tip Thermal. We also look at what to wear underneath them, with a selection of base layers to keep you toasty until the water temperatures rise.

Goggles are always an individual thing, but there’s a taster of what the swim brands have to offer. And in the costumes, new Funkita prints stand out alongside the Speedo Powerform Women’s Swimsuit’s sporty and supportive design. There’s also ear plugs, swim hats and kit bags for it all to go in.

A big thank you to our testers this month (Gail, Kathrine, Bex, Lizzy, Emily, James and Adam), who along with Alice and Jonathan put the kit through its paces.

About Outdoor Swimmer

Our April issue is our one-year anniversary issue, and it's a cracker to get you in the mood for the start of the main outdoor swimming season. On the training front, we've got a couple of kick and pull sets to try out or a fitness and technique boost, and would look at how poor technique may not only slow you down but also be a factor in shoulder injuries. Our contributor Becky Horsbrugh relates how she became a hero for a day in Bangladesh when she swam across the Bangla Channel. Then, just in case you thought outdoor swimming was a new thing, Richard Nelsson tells us the story of two swimmers from the 1950s who went about swimming in every tarn in the Lake District, naked.
