The hottest day of the year so far. I was walking towards the hames wearing board shorts, lip lops and carrying a pair of goggles. A boy, about 10 or 11 years old, cycling the other way, saw the goggles in my hand, looked me in the eye and said: “You’re not going to drown, are you?”. For some reason, Swallows and Amazons came to mind, and the response by telegram from the children’s father when they requested permission to sail on the lake. he telegram said: “BETTER DROWNED THAN DUFFERS IF NOT DUFFERS WONT DROWN”.
