Seven novice swimmers. Twelve weeks of training. One 10km sea swim. An impossible goal? Not for swim coach Lawrence Stubbs

Aquestion I often get asked is: “Do you think I could swim an open water marathon?” My answer is always an emphatic “Yes!”, but the real challenge is to convince them the unimaginable is possible.

Taking people on a difficult journey is not unique to open water swimming. Creating the environment for success is the real challenge for any coach or leader. Whether in business, academia, or ocean swimming, people thrive in a constructive, supportive and inclusive environment.

For a novice swimmer the idea of completing a solo in the 10km Southhead Rough Water Swim (SHRS) in Sydney with just 12 weeks’ training and only 2km of race distance under their belt would be considered a pipedream, but that’s exactly what a group of swimmers from Thirroul in New South Wales achieved.

About Outdoor Swimmer

Welcome to the Christmas issue. This month we talk to English Channel record holder Becky Lewis about her seven crossings (and counting!) and to Beth French about her plan to complete the Oceans Seven in one year, despite suffering from ME. Have you ever wanted to swim an Ice Mile? We have expert advice on how to train safely for one of swimming's most extreme challenges. And if you like a bit of trail running with your outdoor swimming, we take an in-depth look at the endurance sport of swimrun. We have inspiring travel features on Italy, Scotland and the French Riviera. And as it's Christmas we have some delicious cake recipes to try! Plus all the usual training advice and sessions, news, interviews, inspirational stories and event listings for 2016.
