2019 SWIM GUIDE

Our pick of the year’s must-do events for everyone from beginners to marathon swimmers

BEGINNER SWIMS

Great Swim Series

Where many people’s open water journey starts, the Great Swim Series is for swimmers of all abilities. Around half of the people taking part will not have swum in the outdoors before, so you won’t be alone! There are three events around the country to choose from: Great North Swim in Windermere, Great Scottish Swim in Loch Lomond and Great East Swim in Alton Water, Suffolk. Distances for beginners include 250m (great for kids and families), the half mile and the classic one mile swim. For more experienced swimmers, there are 2-mile, 5k and 10k options – as well as swimrun races for those looking for a new challenge.

Great North Swim, Lake District, 7-9 June Great East Swim, Suffolk, 22 June Great Scottish Swim, Loch Lomond, August greatswim.org

If you like the sound of that, why not try…

Votwo – Salty Sea Dog Long Sea Swims

For the more adventurous beginner, the 2.5k or 3.8k sea swims at Boscombe Beach, Bournemouth, are a great challenge.

Boscombe, 1 June, 6 June, 3 August votwo.co.uk

A once-a-year opportunity to swim a full circuit of Hyde Park’s famous man-made lake…

About Outdoor Swimmer

In our January issue we tell the strange outdoor swimming history of Mao Zedong, we test a chilly willy combobulator and ponder the female gender bias in cold water swimming, leap off a waterfall in Yorkshire while discussing ways to combat the winter blues, and take up stand-up paddleboarding. Plus, our pick of our favourite events in 2019 to help you plan your new year adventures, and our resident Olympian Cassie Patten gives her top tips for motivation to help you achieve your swim goals. And just in case it all gets too much, we look at how to avoid burnout and show you how to strengthen your shoulders and avoid rotator cuff injuries.
