In the beginning – or maybe just 335 million years ago – there was only Pangea. The most recent of several supercontinents that have played bumper cars across our blue marble since the beginning of time, the Paleozoic era supercontinent encompassed all the land on Earth. Some 160 million years after it formed, Pangea couldn’t keep the band together, and continental shapes not so dissimilar from the seven we know today broke off and drifted away from one another. This sometimes violent but glacially slow drift and shift process eventually led to Europe sitting to the north of Africa, with only a narrow sliver of water separating the two formerly conjoined landmasses.
