I’d long dreamed of undertaking a big swim. I’d set my heart on the Dardenelles, but then I learnt that the strong current means you can’t swim straight across, and with a 90-minute cut off, I decided the swim was beyond my abilities.
So I started googling and discovered an entire genre of vacation that had previously eluded me. There are swimming holidays around the globe, but a trip to the Cote d’Azur tempted me most. The advertised average daily swim distance was 3km, which I had only swum before once or twice. What the hell, I thought, in for a penny, in for a pound!
