Tahoe Blue

The early days of swimmers crisscrossing a high-altitude lake.

America’s largest alpine lake is breathtaking, not just in visual beauty, but literally, too. Situated deep in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada state line and lies at a gasp-inducing 1,900 metres’ elevation.

Lake Tahoe derives its name from the Washo word dá’aw, which means simply “the lake,” and it’s a vast inland sea. At nearly 600 metres deep, Tahoe is America’s second deepest lake; if its 39 trillion gallons of water were spread out over the entire state of California, the water would form a huge puddle more than 14 inches deep.

Measuring roughly 21 miles long by 12 miles wide in a wobbly oval shape, Tahoe’s waters are so clear, you can see 70 feet down in some locations. That clarity and depth creates the most striking shade of blue – it’s like liquid sky just glittering there, rimmed ‘round by mountains.
