“I KEEP THINKING ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT MIGHT GO WRONG AND WHAT I’M SCARED ABOUT”

Helen Davis explains how to take control of your thinking

Unpredictability and open water swimming go hand in hand. There are many factors in an open water environment which can increase worries and fears in swimmers. Bringing control to thinking at these times to cope with anxieties can help make the swimming experience more enjoyable and feel more manageable.

AIM FOR CONTROL

Bringing control to thinking can be challenging as it can be easy to focus on uncertainty. Open water swimming does carry many uncertainties and risks and it is important to have a healthy respect for the environment and follow appropriate guidelines. However, focusing on uncertainties can lead to heightened emotions, such as fear and anxiety, so it is important to aim to keep control of thinking. Focusing on what you need to do to swim well will bring a sense of control.Thinking in helpful ways can direct focus to you and your preparation, increase belief in your personal ability and what can be achieved. This way you are more likely to lourish in an unpredictable environment.
