My eldest son was 17 months old and I was 14 weeks pregnant when my husband and I split up. I moved in with my parents and we were there until my second son was six months old. The split – which involved another person – was quite high conlict. It was diicult to talk about practicalities, such as what time the boys’ dad would spend with them. As well as that, there were other people who were upset about the situation – my family, his family, mutual friends. They all had their own feelings and expectations of how matters should be handled. But, I realised that I was never going to be able to make decisions that everyone would agree with. The only way I was going to be able to get through it was to always try to make choices that I would be able to look back on without regret.
