When I sit down to write, something inside me says, ‘Welcome home.’ It is the writing, greeting me. I don’t hear it all the time: only if I have begun with true openness to what might arrive. If I am using it to make me look clever, or if I try to force it into a shape it doesn’t want to take, the writing delivers dry, hollow words: husks.
