American war

Omar El Akkad

McClelland & Stewart

When former Globe and Mail journalist Omar El Akkad completed work on the manuscript for American War, he had no way of knowing that the book’s publication would come at such an auspicious moment in history. With the Trump administration firmly ensconced in power, political cleavages in the U.S. have split wide open and far-right protests around the preservation of Confederate monuments have resulted in violence, a situation that is eerily reflective of the material at the heart of El Akkad’s novel. American War offers a dystopian vision that imagines the fallout from a second U.S. Civil War, a conflict driven by ethnic animosity and climate change. In this sensitive and deeply felt narrative, El Akkad has not created a simple morality tale or Hollywoodstyle blockbuster, but something much deeper and more troubling: a stark and vivid portrait of a n American f uture t hat seems closer to reality with every passing day. This is one of the year’s most prescient – and increasingly urgent – novels. –SWB
