From all accounts, t he Writers’ Union of Canada’s annual general meetings are energetic affairs, attracting some of the advocacy organization’s most passionate members to various locales around the country. Back at the 1989 AGM, Lenore Keeshig-Tobias, a poet from the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, addressed TWUC members during a panel discussion, asking them to “stop stealing Native stories,” which in turn launched a broader public discussion around cultural appropriation, and the ground-breaking Writing Thru Race conference in 1994.
