THREE PICTURE-BOOK ILLUSTRATORS GIVE US A PEEK INTO THEIR STUDIOS AND PROCESSES

WORKING WITH graphite, India ink, and acrylic paint on Masonite, Toronto artist and musician Matt James creates vibrant, energetic picture-book illustrations that garner acclaim from readers and critics alike.

In May, Groundwood Books will release James’s sixth project, The Stone Thrower. Written by Jael Richardson (see p. 14), the book is based on Richardson’s father, former professional football player Chuck Ealey.

“When I read [it], I was like, ‘I have no idea what I’m going to do for this,’ which is really exciting because it gives you an opportunity to be creative. I knew I wouldn’t be repeating anything I’d done before,” says James, who purposely avoided looking at photos of Ealey as a child in order to make his images as universal as possible.

Next, he'll be illustrating When the Moon Comes by Paul Harbridge, tentatively slated for a fall 2017 release with Tundra Books. In these photos, James explains his process as he creates some concept art for that book:
