2015 World Rowing Coastal Championships

Guin Batten, two-time World Rowing Coastal Champion and world record holder for crossing the English Channel, reports on the action from Peru.

Lima is a monster of a city, brutal yet beautiful. The buildings are perched on the edge of cliffs looking east over the waters of the vast Pacific. The latter is the largest and most powerful ocean in the world and it is no coincidence that the first ever Surfing World Championship was held along this coast back in the 60’s. The ocean runs free for over 5,000 miles, sucking the energy of dozens of storms into deep ocean swell before they stand up to crash with supreme violence into the arid cliffs of Lima.

If you stand in the tourist bars of Miraflores and look out towards the setting sun you will see the local surfers waiting in the line up; cast your eyes another 100m further out to sea and you will be looking at the most perfect play ground for the new breed of coastal rowers.
