THE PARALYMPICS

The round-up from Rio

Ninth of September 2016, and the Lagoa was ready for action again under the stern gaze of Christ the Redeemer. The lake's whippy surface provided plenty of challenge to the Paralympic rowers, but served up a vintage regatta, culminating in the four medal finals on day three.

Women's arms-only singles

The longest para-rowing final began in a flurry of lactic acid, the oarswomen whizzing away from the 1000m start with China's fast newcomer Wang Lili in the lead. The most recent world champions, 2015's Moran Samuel (Israel) and 2014's Birgit Skarstein (Norway), rapidly followed, but the season's form competitor, Britain's Rachel Morris, was struggling at the back, in what she described later as "an appalling start".

As the race unfolded Wang quickly forged ahead of Samuel, who was fading. Skarstein took on the race, at one stage going stroke-for-stroke with the Chinese rower, both clear water ahead of the chasing scullers. At 400m to go it looked as if these two would contest the top medals. But Morris wasn't finished yet.

Digging deep to try and pass Samuel, Morris started to raise the rate, notching it into the high 40s, and in so doing, closing rapidly on the two leaders. Skarstein's rate dropped and she fell behind Samuel, Wang continued to push, but Morris was inexorably closing the gap.
