Athletes and Immunity:How to stay fit,well and strong during

Becoming a successful athlete requires a strong, fully switched-on and functioning immune system. Robust enough not just to resist infection but to deal with it quickly when it hits. Whilst moderate recreational exercise confers significant immune system advantages, high level intense exercise can impose harsh changes and stress not unlike those stresses from trauma and severe infection. This increases risk and susceptibity to infection.

Unfortunately, endurance athletes appear to be particularly vulnerable, especially if you are female or genetically susceptible. Interestingly, there is evidence that elite athletes are less likely to suffer infections and recover more quickly; this may be because of genetics or because they take more care of themselves.
