The Rowers Conference

Had Christof Schweining, a physiology lecturer at Cambridge University, really just said: “We know that the most important organ that drives athletic performance is your skin – not your muscles.”

Before now, I didn’t even know that the ‘skin’ was something you could train.

Walking out at the end of the inaugural Rowers Conference, held at Dorney Lake, UK, in January, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I had learned.

It got me thinking: does Jürgen Gröbler’s phenomenally successful British men’s squad ‘train their skin – by utilizing the body’s sweat system?’ Not apparently when rows of British squad oarsmen are stripped to their shorts while doing their 16k ergs. But, according to Schweining, if you want to increase your VO2 more effectively, you need to cover-up while training.
