The 163rd Edition, 2017

The Boat Races create an emotional pivot in the rowing world, a point in time when non-rowers finally grasp what it feels like to win and lose a massive sporting event.

Through a mere quirk of history it is Oxford and Cambridge, rather than Cal and UW, Sydney and Melbourne, Harvard and Yale, London and Molesey, Edinburgh and Glasgow or Notts County and Leander, who end up fixed in the spotlight of global interest as they take part in their annual derby. The identities of the crews concerned no longer matter - nor even the fact that they rarely nowadays contain Olympians – it has turned from a mere contest into a tradition which is reinforced every year by the millions who watch around the world.
