@In Their Own

Row360 sat down with the 2013-2018 USA W2x, Ellen Tomek and Meghan O’Leary, to talk about their turbulent summer, and why they think the system needs changing.

The complex US national team system sees some big boats selected at national team camps, but the rest are decided at a series of trials during the early summer. Tomek and O’Leary have won two champs and four world cup medals going to the last six championships (five worlds, one Olympics) as the selected US W2x. In May 2019 they finished second at trials to a new partnership of Gevvie Stone and Cicely Madden and so lost their US team nomination. The question on everyone’s lips was why didn’t they then go into the quad, given their experience? Here Tomek and O’Leary explain why.
