For three years from 2014-2016, the US men’s eight seemed to have lost their medal-winning habit. Most of the American rowing community – to say nothing of the rest of the world – knew that there was perhaps one man who could help the once mighty American eight rediscover their mojo: Mike Teti.

California Berkeley’s coach is a twelve-time US national team member, with a world gold and Olympic bronze medal in the eight amongst his laurels. He became a coaching legend when he coached the US men’s eight to Olympic gold in 2004. In the nine years between 1997 and 2005, his eights won four world championship titles. Add to that two Olympic bronze medals in 1996 and 2008 and you have one of the world’s most successful coaches.

This summer, the charismatic coach from Upper Darby Philadelphia answered the call and took over as USRowing’s lead men’s sweep coach.

He immediately invited America’s top coaches to help him. The result of that was that Teti’s eight won an unlikely silver medal behind Germany at the world championships in Sarasota. Just three weeks later his Cal Varsity eight defeated allcomers in Boston’s Head of the Charles, setting a new course record in the process.
