Time To Go

David Tanner

Within a few weeks of this issue going to press, at the end of February 2018, one of the most influential characters in both British and world rowing will hang up his rowing clipboard. Sir David Tanner CBE, the performance director of British Rowing for 21 years and the facilitator of many gold medals, gave three months’ notice of resignation at the end of November 2017.

He told Row360 he had been considering the change and discussing it with close friends for more than a year before choosing this timing, having just completed the review of rowing planning for the Tokyo Olympics. Initially he considered stopping after Rio, but decided to stay on for another year, not least because Britain had experienced its biggest athlete turnover for several Olympiads.

“A key moment was ten days before I told the team. I’d just completed the mission review for Tokyo, which I had to finish. The most important thing is that I’ve laid the basis for successful continuity and it was the right time to stop business-wise. Our finance is secure, we’ve met our targets, and UK Sport planning for the Paris Olympiad starts in about a year. The easiest thing would have been to tick on. The harder thing is to pick the right time to go.”
