OLYMPIC PREVIEW

Some of the worlds best rowers give their personal insight

When we asked Martin Cross, Olympic gold medallist, rowing author and broadcaster to put together an Olympic preview for Row360, he told us the best preview would come straight from the mouths of some of the worlds top rowers preparing for Rio. Shortly after Lucerne, Cross caught up with Lisa Schmidla, stroke of the German women’s quadruple scull; Eric Murray, bow of the New Zealand pair; Morten Jørgensen, stroke of the Danish lightweight four; Jess Eddie, ‘5’ in the British women’s eight and Roel Bras, bow of the Dutch men’s pair. Weeks away from their own Olympic fate, this is their take on the action to come.

What events, outside of your own, are you most looking forward to watching in Rio?

Lisa: First, the women’s eight; the style from the USA is so, so impressive. You can see, they are fighting every single stroke to win this. They have so much power.

But in Lucerne the British were very near. Their style is much more fluent. Then in the women’s single scull, I think it's going to be ‘Kim versus Emma’. Both are such great scullers. Kim is a very clean rower on a high technical-level. Emma has found her own style to row, but it's very efficient. Finally, in the men's quad, the top crews are all at a similar level of speed. Just the Australians showed their quality in the last five hundred in Lucerne. These four guys have a very equal and individual style to row. They have no big lean back, just pushing the boat at the beginning and the middle of the stroke. I love this style of rowing.

Eric: In the men’s single: I’m looking forward to the ‘Synek Vs Mahe’ showdown in Rio. Those two are the standout scullers of the past four years and I’m sure, barring illness or injury, that it will be a match-race for the gold and silver. That is going to be a cracker!
