I’m on a weekend away with my wife, Karen. I should be enjoying a well-earned break. Yet something’s been weighing heavily on my mind.

I’d been mulling it over all morning as Karen and I wandered around the local shops. When we got back to the hotel room and I lowered myself onto the bed, she took one look at me and could tell something was wrong. ‘It’s these new fitness tests they’re introducing for work,’ I said. ‘I know it’s a couple of years away, but I honestly don’t think I’ll pass like this. I’m so much bigger than when I first joined the force and I do no exercise…if I’m not fit enough, I could lose my job.’
