At my biggest, I reckon I could have won an Oscar for best actress. I played the part of the cheerful pub landlady so well that even my own husband didn’t have a clue I was deeply unhappy. The regulars would sometimes comment on my curves, teasing me about having failed at yet another diet – and I laughed along with them like a good sport. It was all an act, though. The real me was shy, quiet and hated being the centre of attention, particularly when everyone felt they could make jokes about my size. Too embarrassed to confide in anyone about how low I was feeling, I cheered myself up the only way I knew how: by reaching for crisps, chocolate or cake.
