All in the genes?

Your size isn’t ‘just the way you’re built’ – whatever your family traits, you can reprogramme your weight-loss destiny

There are some things that are undoubtedly inherited from your parents. From your mum, probably some questionable dance moves, and from your dad, perhaps a blind devotion to an underachieving football club.

Thanks for that, folks… Joking aside, when it comes to weight, lots of us seem to follow in our parents’ footsteps. But there’s good news: even if your dad is a ‘big fella’ and your mum has a love-hate relationship with the scales, your future isn’t set in stone.

‘It’s true that research has uncovered specific genes that can make us more susceptible to weight gain through various methods, including increasing hunger,’ says Slimming World nutritionist Alexandra Clark. ‘However, even if we do have those genes, it doesn’t mean this will definitely lead to us being overweight. There are many other factors at play, such as our environment, food choices and activity levels.’
