Smartphones that do more for the planet (and its population) than simply connect it are very much a thing, and this pair are deserving of your attention

€399 /

The Fairphone 2 is a modular Android phone made using an ethical supply chain of conflict-free materials. The company also claims to promote good working conditions for production line employees. This includes membership of the Clean Electronics Production Network (CEPN), aiming to stop workers’ exposure to toxic chemicals when handling components. It’s also the first phone to integrate Fairtrade gold.

Thanks to its modular design you can quickly and cheaply replace virtually every component, from the display to the cameras, earpiece and vibration mechanism – right down to the screws. This should make upgrades easy when a Fairphone 3, still a concept, surfaces.
