Red Raven Games

Meet gaming’s power couple: Ryan and Malorie Laukat, the talent behind the visionary worlds of Above and Below, Eight-Minute Empire, and Empires of the Void who want to bring everybody together around the table

The worlds of Red Raven games are often brought to life by Ryan Laukat’s artwork

Ryan Laukat began his board game career working as an illustrator for companies such as Dominion maker Rio Grande and Pandemic studio Z-Man. Eventually, the artist started pitching his own design ideas.

“Around 2011 I designed Empires of the Void and pitched it to Tasty Minstrel Games,” he says. “They were interested but I ended up just going with Kickstarter.”

Empires of the Void was inspired by Twilight Imperium, which Ryan and his then-new wife Malorie were playing together with their friends. Malorie was sucked into the realm of board gaming through Ryan.

“I liked to play games with my grandma but it was different when I met Ryan and he introduced me to strategy games,” says Malorie. “We didn’t date so much as hang out while he designed games. It was how our relationship developed. I would give feedback and play his prototypes. I didn’t realise we were collaborating!”
