THE BEAST IS BACK

SIX YEARS AFTER THEIR BREAK-UP IN 2010, CANADIAN DEATHCORE CREW DESPISED ICON ARE BACK WITH NEW ALBUM ‘BEAST’, AND IT’S LIKE THE SPLIT NEVER HAPPENED. VOCALIST ALEX ERIAN CHECKS IN.

“To be honest I still wanted to do the band when we broke up but not at all costs, it had reached a point where it was probably going to be me and a bunch of new members, so I didn’t want it to be ‘Alex and the Despised Icons’ and ultimately be a cover band. Some bands have pulled that off but I just didn't feel comfortable in that setting, I started it out with the boys and I wanted to end it with the boys,” explains Alex Erian, one of the band’s two vocalists. “I took maybe a year off and I can picture myself at my new job in the office and it was a well-paid job, a lot of advantages and whatnot, but I was just miserable after two months. I just wanted to get back out there and play music because that’s what I'm all about and I guess it’s not out of my system yet! For the rest of the guys, they were burnt out. Our drummer mentioned that he didn’t play drums for a solid two years, he hardly even listened to music for the first six months following the band’s break-up s o that was our mindset at the time. What’s cool now is that everybody can maintain their current job obligations and they can still be family men and provide back home, but now when we go on tour every show actually counts. You don’t get lost in that whole touring grind.”

About Terrorizer Magazine

Devin Townsend: it’s a name synonymous with heavy and extreme metal, and also a name associated with the occasional foray into acoustic and country albums, not to mention albums featuring coffee loving puppets! And of course, who could forget his very own dedication to this here mag he created a few years ago with his mighty ‘Terrorizer’ song – only Onslaught had ever done a homage to a metal mag before this, if memory serves me correctly. There’s something for everyone, which is something rare in many musician’s repertoires. Devin’s enjoyed and created a rather unique musical path and 25 albums in, it’s awesome to see that this month, there are no signs of him letting up. Read all about what he’s been up to over the past few years and how he’s feeling about life in our cover story. Elsewhere this issue is jam packed with a delectable array of quality bands including plenty of UK bands – Akercocke, The Wounded Kings, Slomatics, Coltsblood, and Iron Witch – and plenty of worldwide ones too. Extreme music, no boundaries! See you next month. Darren Sadler
