THE CHANGELING

JENKS MILLER, THE FIERCELY CREATIVE MASTERMIND BEHIND HORSEBACK, IS BACK WITH ‘DEAD RINGERS’, ONE OF HIS MOST ESOTERIC AND BIZARRE RECORDS YET. TERRORIZER SAT DOWN WITH HIM TO DISCUSS THE ALBUM’S THEMES, DAVID CRONENBERG FILMS AND THE MUSIC OF COIL AND NURSE WITH WOUND…

What can you tell us about your new album ‘Dead Ringers’ and how it compares to previous records? It seems a lot more richly textured than 2014’s ‘Piedmont Apocrypha’, we’ve been listening to it a lot lately and seem to hear new things in it every time.

“Horseback’s electronic, dub, and post-punk influences are more pronounced on this record. Those influences were often relegated to the more abstract, texture-based tracks in Horseback’s catalog, but here they’re frequently a foundation for songs. Vocal delivery is more melodic, though it’s still subverted by other elements of the arrangements. I’ve tried to make all of the records highly detailed and textured so that they all reward repeated listens – the relatively clean production on ‘Dead Ringers’ probably makes those details more accessible. Horseback’s songs are usually based on minimal repetition, and I’ve found that sonic detail can serve as a stepping stone for the listener, carrying attention (or maybe distracting attention?) long enough to allow a trance to set in. That texture you’re talking about is very important to me, while both listening to records and writing my own.”

About Terrorizer Magazine

Devin Townsend: it’s a name synonymous with heavy and extreme metal, and also a name associated with the occasional foray into acoustic and country albums, not to mention albums featuring coffee loving puppets! And of course, who could forget his very own dedication to this here mag he created a few years ago with his mighty ‘Terrorizer’ song – only Onslaught had ever done a homage to a metal mag before this, if memory serves me correctly. There’s something for everyone, which is something rare in many musician’s repertoires. Devin’s enjoyed and created a rather unique musical path and 25 albums in, it’s awesome to see that this month, there are no signs of him letting up. Read all about what he’s been up to over the past few years and how he’s feeling about life in our cover story. Elsewhere this issue is jam packed with a delectable array of quality bands including plenty of UK bands – Akercocke, The Wounded Kings, Slomatics, Coltsblood, and Iron Witch – and plenty of worldwide ones too. Extreme music, no boundaries! See you next month. Darren Sadler
