SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE

NEW ORLEANS’ GOATWHORE MIGHT LIKE THEIR METAL BLACKENED, BUT FRONTMAN BEN FAL GOUST IS KEEN TO EXPLAIN THAT THERE’S MORE TO THE QUARTET THAN MEETS THE EYES (AND EARS) – AS NEW ALBUM ‘VENGEFUL ASCENSION’ TESTIFIES

GOATWHORE

“WE DECIDED TO TAKE THE GAMBLE AND DO SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AND EMBARK UPON TOTALLY NEW TERRAIN”

If you were a ‘mainstream’ dude (or dudette) standing on the periphery of the world of extreme music, there’s a pretty good chance you’d think Ben Falgoust was bat-shit crazy, full of crap or delusional. Maybe all three. First out of the gate, he’s scarred his lungs and run his throat raw for twenty years in a band called Goatwhore. Secondly, the New Orleans-based band’s canon is littered with songs and song titles that, on the surface at the very least, revel and relish in themes of blasphemy, the occult and the dark side of physical and spiritual life. ‘Carving Out The Eyes Of God’, ‘Invert The Virgin’, ‘Parasitic Scriptures Of The Sacred Word’ amongst others, whether they be metaphorically fantastical or not, dump fuel on the presumptive fire that its creators have one heck of a Satanic screw loose. And if all that weren’t enough to direct the assumption towards Ben and his comrades in musical mayhem – guitarist Sammy Duet, drummer Zack Simmons and bassist James Harvey (Robert “Trans Am” Coleman has been filling in live for new husband and father James) – being a potentially murderous, knuckle-dragging cult, the quartet went all in with the blasphemy on last album, 2014’s ‘Constricting Rage Of The Merciless’, with what ended up as the album’s centerpiece track, ‘Fucked By Satan’. Someone without the experience of a life in underground extreme music and an understanding of our scene’s cultural nuances, dark sensibilities and darker sense of humour would automatically presume the Goatwhore frontman to be a lunatic.

About Terrorizer Magazine

I can still recall the phone call I had from Earache’s label manager Dan about this incredibly awesome Polish band the label had just signed called Decapitated. The enthusiasm that he conveyed down the phone line was infectious and although I was working for a more mainstream metal/rock mag at the time, and bands like Decapitated were on the periphery of the magazine’s demographic, I was excited to check them out. Sure enough the sheer power, professionalism and technical brilliance that pummelled out of the office speakers was enough to have me (and the office) hooked in a nanosecond. That was, of course, back in 2000 when Decapitated had just released their incredible (and still awesome) ‘Winds Of Creation’. Fast-forward seventeen years and even though Lady Luck has not, in many ways, been on the band’s side, Decapitated have continued to push their own creative boundaries and their new album ‘Anticult’ is testament to this. It’s a pleasure to have them grace Terrorizer’s new cover and we hope you enjoy reading about the album’s creation and everything that’s been going on in their world. Elsewhere, we’ve put all our collective blood, sweat, tears and breakdowns into ensuring we have all bases covered in the extreme world. It’s a volatile time right now, but music continues to bring plenty of pleasure, so indulge in it as much as you can! See you next month! Darren Sadler
