Rethinking the sketch

Having realised he needed to reinvent his style, Martin Kinnear set himself on a quest to find a fresh approach to his work. This month he shares his thoughts on sketching and finding inspiration

A NEW WAY OF WOR K ING: 2ND OF 4

In late summer 2016 I rented a house in the Yorkshire Dales so I could paint them. This is the second part of the story of how an idea becomes a project, a project becomes a show, and how you can avoid the artistic mistakes I’ve made along the way. This month I want to discuss sketching and finding inspiration.

Regular readers may recall that in early 2017 my new project, ‘Beyond Here’, had hit the rails. Characteristically, I’d thrown myself into it with more enthusiasm than thought, and turned out a lot of paintings I could have done without setting foot outside my Norfolk studio. Chastened, I realised that to get this right, I’d need to immerse myself in the subject and try to see it through fresh eyes, but how?

Sketching and seeing

Throughout this series I’m presenting some of my golden rules. They’re hard won, so I offer them freely in the hope you’ll learn from my mistakes. The first one of this instalment is this: ‘do it your way, not the right way’.
