Helen Allingham was an artist ahead of her time. By 1890 she had become the first woman to be admitted to full membership of the Royal Watercolour Society and her work was highly acclaimed by leading critics of the day. This exhibition at Watts Gallery in Lower Compton, near Guildford (well worth a visit in its own right), brings together rarely seen works from private and public collections to reconfirm her reputation as a key figure in Victorian art. The exhibition continues Watts Gallery Trust’s programme of exhibitions devoted to pioneering women artists.
Helen Allingham (1848-1926) is at the Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, Down Lane, Lower Compton, Guildford, Surrey, from November 21 until February 18.
