‘‘My aims here were to flatten perspective and give the still-life group an oriental feel, inspired by the white orchid. I set up the group, taking plenty of photographs from different angles as additional reference, before laying down a red ground that would show through the sgraffito I wanted to use. The palette was restricted to reds, black and greens to help with the oriental feel, with a warm Naples yellow light.
